Google Docs is an online application where the user is able to create, save, and share files such as documents, spreadsheets, presentations and forms, all of which are compatible with their Microsoft counterparts.
To be able to use Google docs the user must have a google account where their created or uploaded documents can be saved to. The documents can then be "starred" or favourited, or shared with others who have Google Docs or just be opened by the user alone. Google Docs is similar to SkyDrive but can as it can store documents online and share them with others but what differs the two is that in Google Docs the user is able to edit the content online whereas SkyDrive is downloadable content. Google Docs can be seen as having a mix of Evernote and SkyDrive features but all being in the one online application that is accessed anywhere over the internet.
Here are two printscreens on Google Docs. One is of the main menu and the other is an example of a document in edit mode.
Delicious is a social bookmarking site that allows the user to save, tag, manage and share web pages from the site as a community over the internet. The sites that the user bookmarks can be accessed anywhere over the internet when signed into their account which makes it easier to remember and access past pages that they've saved. The accounts are free to sign up for although the user would need a Yahoo account in order to sign up. I used one of my own personal Yahoo accounts for this purpose. The user can then edit their own Delicious address for easy access.
I've created my own Delicious account but I haven't added any bookmarks yet so I won't provide a printscreen for it.
1. What do you understand by a Wave being a "hosted conversation" ?
In Wave there is only one copy of the email being sent to multiple people who have been invited to view it. If these selected people are online at the same time they are able to instantly reply to each other's messages just like a chat or a hosted conversation.
2. What are the advantages of having only a single copy of a document ?
Having only a single copy of the original document means that it doesn't have multiple copies which have been altered, where the documents may get mixed up. By having one copy, all the replies and comments are posted on the original document meaning that it's not messy and there's no mix up of documents.
3. What are the drawbacks of IM and email as described in the article ?
The reviewer states that both email and IM work best as a means of communication between two people as it originally did. The amount of people replying to an email exchange whether replying to all of just to the sender makes for a messy interchange with notes and other disclaimers everywhere. IM on the other hand is just like any other chat with large amounts of people, where different people are replying to different messages or questions.
4. What are some promising features of Wave ?
Features such as the ability to drag and drop items from the desktop or folder and into Wave without the hassle of having to search and attach the document makes Wave much simpler and easier to use and is accessed immediately.
5. What does the reviewer see as some of the negatives about this beta version of Wave ?
A negative on Wave is that it is difficult to locate the new messages in the inbox and messages that are directly for you aren't flagged so there is no way of knowing which one's are for you specifically. Also the playback feature could have been a little better and instead of having to keep pressing a button to find out what happened next, a single button click with variable speed would have been a better way to playback past events.
6. The article mentions several times that Wave has elements of both live chat and archived posts, what does this mean ? What are the advantages of this ?
By Wave having elements of live chat members of an exchange are quickly able to reply to each other when they are online, similar to a meeting, and by the use of archived posts members of the exchange who are offline are able to catch up on the posts that have been previously added and are able to add their own either commenting on the post or editing it. This ensures that members don't skip parts of events that occurred whilst they weren't online and also can be used as a tool where a meeting can be held online, instead of in a room without the hassle of getting there on time as it's easily accessed.
7. What type of content can Wave hold ?
Wave can hold all sorts of content that is sent from member to member in the exchange. These include Word Documents, presentations, PDF's, audio and video files and all other common types of content although the speed at which these send may vary due to internet connection speeds.
8. How might you use Wave ? Could it be useful with schoolwork ?
I would use Wave for group assignments where it would be an easy tool for online collaboration and can be accessed anywhere as long as an internet connection is available. It's simple and easy to use to using it for group assignments for school makes communication and collaboration between members much easier.
Evernote is an online application where you are able to make online notes using a computer, phone or the web. It was designed to act as an online post-it note where your notes can be accessible anywhere you go over the internet. It can also clip web pages just like a bookmark function and store screenshots or photos. Everything that a user uploads into their Evernote account, is stored and indexed to allow for easy searching via keywords, titles and tags. Evernote can also find handwritten text inside images. The user is also able to sort their notes out into separate notebooks. Another convenient feature is that you are able to email your notes to a specified email address given by Evernote to which they will sort your notes and save it under a default folder.
To use Evernote one must create their own account for free with a 40MB upload allowance per month but by upgrading to premium with the payment of $5 you are able to get a 500MB monthly upload limit. This site makes a great tool for taking notes such as note taking at a university lecture via a laptop or netbook and is easily accessible. Evernote works similar to Window's Skydrive although is much more private whereas on SkyDrive you are able to share files via a public or shared folder with specific groups.
Thank You.
Windows 7 is the successor of Windows Vista and hopefully would succeed its predesseccor by far, Windows Vista having partially destroyed Microsoft's reputation. Windows 7 features a new interface that is easier to use and also features the ability to use two windows at the same time, a feature which was only available by manually tiling windows vertically in previous operating systems. Windows 7 looks much like Windows Vista having retained its trademark aero theme but is also proving much more fast and efficient compared to Windows Vista, although a majority of businsesses are yet to make the switch from the more popular operating system of Windows XP, which is by far Microsoft's greatest operating system.
Here are a few questions the task wanted answered:
1. What versions is Windows 7 available in?
There are 6 versions that Windows 7 is avaiulable in, including:
- Windows 7 Starter
- Windows 7 Home Premuim
- Windows 7 Professional
- Windows 7 Ultimate
- Windows 7 OEM
- Windows 7 Enterprise
2. Describe some of the features of the new task bar.
The look os Windows 7 is much like Windows Vista having kept the aero theme but is much easier to use featuring pinned programs, mouse over controls, jump lists, simplified resizing and faster personalisation capabilities which don't require the computer to reboot before changes taking effect.
3. What are jump lists and how will they be useful?
Jump lists are used to show the recently used files under a specific pinned program to the task bar. This is useful for retrieving work that is commonly worked on or was last used.
4. How can one quickly size two windows to fill the desktop side by side?
By opening the two windows from the taskbar and dragging them to the side of the other window the Windows 7 operating system automatically resizes the two windows to half the size of the screen. This was always available in previous operating systems by tiling two windows that were open but is now easier to use with a simple funtion in Windows 7.
5. What is XP mode. What users would find this feature most useful would it be useful?
XP mode can be used in business situations which make the two operating systems compatible with each other. It creates a virtual XP environment where it is able to run older programs made for XP but looks and funtions as a Windows 7 system. This is useful as businesses don't need to change their programs to suit the new operating system and are able to upgrade without the hassle of compatibility with existing programs.
6. What feature related to removable drives has Windows 7 removed in a bid to increase security?
Windows 7 will no longer AutoRun external hard drives and USB's when they're connected and in the process doesn't allow for risky malware infections, making the operating system much safer in terms of security.
7. What are the minimum hardware requirements for windows 7.
- 1GHz processor
- 1GB RAM (32-bit), 2GB RAM (64-bit)
- Supports DirectX 9 graphics device with 128MB of memory
- HD: 16GB (32-bit). 20GB (64-bit)
8. What observations does the article offer regarding performance for Windows 7?
The article compares the minimum hardware requirements, interface, explorer, start menu, taskbar, devices and various areas of performance between the last 2 operating systems of Windows XP and Windows Vista to Windows 7, although Windows 7 is proving to br far more efficient and faster depending on which build or service package used.
