Today in IST we started to research on our selected topic for the project, though we haven't decided which mean of presentation we're going to use. Most likely it will be a form of presentation through the Internet, but nothing has been decided yet.
Here is my half of the research;
1. Provide a definition of your topic.
Credit Card Fraud is the term used to describe theft using a credit card or any other similar form of payment. The purpose of Credit Card Fraud is to obtain goods without paying or to steal money from an account through unauthorised access. The most common type of credit card fraud is done online, by phone or through a stolen credit card. Details used for fraud can be supplied through the Internet, retail merchants who retain credit card numbers that have been processed through their retail outlet, skimming machines, discarded copies of credit card vouchers and from hacking into computers where credit card numbers are stored.
3. Describe the type of data stored about individuals in relation to this topic.
Personal information such as names, addresses and contact numbers about the credit card holder/s are stored in databases along with their credit card numbers, verification codes and account numbers. These databases are operated and maintained by the banks of which the credit card has been supplied through and are capable of holding millions of records about people.
5. What are the ethical responsibilities of those maintaining the database?
There aren't a lot ethical responsibilities for those maintaining the database that isn't covered by the law already, though possibly for those entering new data into the database some responsibilities can be to double check the information they are entering before saving it, keeping the database organised and making sure the records entered are clear, understandable and the correct commands are entered for computers and other people who have authorisation to access and understand it.
Today we we're given our first project on databases. In this project I'll be working with Tatjana on the topic of "Credit Card Fraud" and it's relation to databases.
There are six questions to cover and we're going to answer three questions each, so I'm covering questions 1, 3 and 5 and Tatjana is working on question 2, 4 and 6.
1. Provide a definition of your topic.
2. How are databases involved in this topic?
3. Describe the type of data stored about individuals in relation to this topic.
4. Describe some of the ways in which this data can be misused.
5. What are the ethical responsibilities of those maintaining the database?
6. What are the legal responsibilities of those maintaining the database?
The project outline states that the presentation has to be presented in an electronic format and uploaded to the 10 IST share point site. We will be posting up our findings in blog entries as we go on the questions we're covering on our individual blog pages.
We haven't decided on what electronic format we're going to use as our means of presenting our findings but that will soon be decided within the next few lessons and will be announced in our blog entries very soon.
Thank You.
This is the table of the data types that are available in Access.
The original copy of the table is on my S:Drive along with the database itself.
Thank You.
Bye.
This activity teaches you how to query a database and also how to use commands such as "and", "wild card" and "or", which are represented by symbols such as "*" and "&".
Querying is a command that acts as a search within the table of your created database.
Here are the print screens from the activity, though note that I preferred to keep the images blurred a little in the entry itself and blacked out the names,numbers and streets, for privacy reasons as the records entered are real.
a) Postcode of 2145 or 2146. [ *2145]
No surnames starting with "s".
In today's lesson I created a basic database using Microsoft Access 2003, using the fields of Surname, First Name, Date of Birth, Postcode, Street and Suburb.
In the instructions given on StudentNet, it says to fill in the table with records of 10 people, but I’ve chosen to keep this print screen blank for privacy reasons though the copy on my S: Drive contains some records.
This is a print screen of the table;

Bye.

Hello.
This is the first activity of the Term about our first topic of databases.
This entry is mostly about an electronic database called the Yellow Pages.
Database- An organised body of related information. Some examples of commonly encountered databases are;
- The Yellow Pages
- A mobile phone's contact list.
Activities:
1. On the Yellow Pages website, search up "Computer Equipment Hardware" and enter in the location of Katoomba. Select the option at the top of the results page to cancel out of your results businesses that service Katoomba but are based outside of Katoomba. From the left over results select the one on Katoomba Street. The shop is called, Blue Mountains Business Machines and their contact number is 4782 2333.
2. On the Yellow Pages website, search up "florist" and in location enter "Fowler Road, Merrylands". Cancel the option of results of businesses servicing outside of the area and select the first option on Fowler Road. The shop is called, M & A Fresh Cut Flowers.
This is a map of the location;

3. On the Yellow Pages website, search up "motels" and in the location bar enter, "Noosa QLD". Take out the option for businesses outside of the area and a list of available motels come up for use.
Questions
1. Is the Yellow Pages a database? Give reasons.
The Yellow Pages is a database as it has a collection of relevant information about businesses of a selection of categories. It allows for information to be stored, organised and used.
2. Advantages of this electronic database;
- Easy to use.
- Easy, simple and clear to read.
- Convenient and easy to access.
- Easy to search up what you're looking for.
- More up to date than the book.
3. Disadvantages of this electronic database;
- There is a lot of advertisements scattered around the page that may not have anything to do with what you're looking for.
- There are pages and pages or results and unless you define your search properly then you'll have to look through all of them.
- A lot of companies pay for their businesses to be listed at the top of the results page which doesn't necessarily mean that they are the best.
Hey.
I'm back from the holidays and it's back to work at school.
This is my second year of IST continued on from last year where I was taught by Mr. Cavil and I look forward to being taught by Mr. Lennon this year.
To start off this year our first topic is on Databases and I've started work on our first activity which I'll be posting up soon in my next blog entry.
Thanks.
