Mini Project- Credit Card Fraud
Today in IST we started to research on our selected topic for the project, though we haven't decided which mean of presentation we're going to use. Most likely it will be a form of presentation through the Internet, but nothing has been decided yet.
Here is my half of the research;
1. Provide a definition of your topic.
Credit Card Fraud is the term used to describe theft using a credit card or any other similar form of payment. The purpose of Credit Card Fraud is to obtain goods without paying or to steal money from an account through unauthorised access. The most common type of credit card fraud is done online, by phone or through a stolen credit card. Details used for fraud can be supplied through the Internet, retail merchants who retain credit card numbers that have been processed through their retail outlet, skimming machines, discarded copies of credit card vouchers and from hacking into computers where credit card numbers are stored.
3. Describe the type of data stored about individuals in relation to this topic.
Personal information such as names, addresses and contact numbers about the credit card holder/s are stored in databases along with their credit card numbers, verification codes and account numbers. These databases are operated and maintained by the banks of which the credit card has been supplied through and are capable of holding millions of records about people.
5. What are the ethical responsibilities of those maintaining the database?
There aren't a lot ethical responsibilities for those maintaining the database that isn't covered by the law already, though possibly for those entering new data into the database some responsibilities can be to double check the information they are entering before saving it, keeping the database organised and making sure the records entered are clear, understandable and the correct commands are entered for computers and other people who have authorisation to access and understand it.
