Google Wave
1. What do you understand by a Wave being a "hosted conversation" ?
In Wave there is only one copy of the email being sent to multiple people who have been invited to view it. If these selected people are online at the same time they are able to instantly reply to each other's messages just like a chat or a hosted conversation.
2. What are the advantages of having only a single copy of a document ?
Having only a single copy of the original document means that it doesn't have multiple copies which have been altered, where the documents may get mixed up. By having one copy, all the replies and comments are posted on the original document meaning that it's not messy and there's no mix up of documents.
3. What are the drawbacks of IM and email as described in the article ?
The reviewer states that both email and IM work best as a means of communication between two people as it originally did. The amount of people replying to an email exchange whether replying to all of just to the sender makes for a messy interchange with notes and other disclaimers everywhere. IM on the other hand is just like any other chat with large amounts of people, where different people are replying to different messages or questions.
4. What are some promising features of Wave ?
Features such as the ability to drag and drop items from the desktop or folder and into Wave without the hassle of having to search and attach the document makes Wave much simpler and easier to use and is accessed immediately.
5. What does the reviewer see as some of the negatives about this beta version of Wave ?
A negative on Wave is that it is difficult to locate the new messages in the inbox and messages that are directly for you aren't flagged so there is no way of knowing which one's are for you specifically. Also the playback feature could have been a little better and instead of having to keep pressing a button to find out what happened next, a single button click with variable speed would have been a better way to playback past events.
6. The article mentions several times that Wave has elements of both live chat and archived posts, what does this mean ? What are the advantages of this ?
By Wave having elements of live chat members of an exchange are quickly able to reply to each other when they are online, similar to a meeting, and by the use of archived posts members of the exchange who are offline are able to catch up on the posts that have been previously added and are able to add their own either commenting on the post or editing it. This ensures that members don't skip parts of events that occurred whilst they weren't online and also can be used as a tool where a meeting can be held online, instead of in a room without the hassle of getting there on time as it's easily accessed.
7. What type of content can Wave hold ?
Wave can hold all sorts of content that is sent from member to member in the exchange. These include Word Documents, presentations, PDF's, audio and video files and all other common types of content although the speed at which these send may vary due to internet connection speeds.
8. How might you use Wave ? Could it be useful with schoolwork ?
I would use Wave for group assignments where it would be an easy tool for online collaboration and can be accessed anywhere as long as an internet connection is available. It's simple and easy to use to using it for group assignments for school makes communication and collaboration between members much easier.
